A software product or service should be made available to customers for rent or pay-per-use. After the rental period is over or the account is empty, the product license has to expire securely. The customer should be able to extend the rental period or refill the account for the use of the software product or service through an online download of an appropriate licence.

The Syncrosoft Digital Rights Management Suite offers a comprehensive set of product license types. Time or usage limited product licenses can be used to offer a software product or service for rental or on a pay-per-use basis. Any number of days, product starts or amount of usage time, as limitation for a product license, is possible. A 30 days- rental license grants access to a software application for 30 days. After the rental period is over, the product license expires. A customer who would like to extend the rental period or to refill the account could purchase an appropriate license on a software vendor’s online store, and could use the Syncrosoft License Control Center Software for downloading the license to his Syncrosoft eLicenser protection device. Licenses with any number of starts or time periods could be defined by the software vendor and can be supplied by Syncrosoft.

The counter for the amount of starts or the period of time resides in the protected area of the Syncrosoft eLicenser device. Tampering with or manipulation of the counter is not possible.
